René Furterer: the buyer's guide
René Furterer is the scalp-first hair-care brand founded by a Paris hairstylist in 1957 and now part of the Pierre Fabre pharmacy group. Its philosophy is that healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, and its most famous product is a pre-shampoo scalp treatment, not a shampoo.

What the brand is known for
René Furterer treated scalps in his Paris salon with essential oils and plant extracts, and the brand still sells the treatments he developed. The ranges are sorted by concern: Complexe 5 and Triphasic for the scalp and thinning, Karité for dry hair, Absolue Kératine for damaged hair, Astera for sensitive scalps, Naturia for daily washing, and Okara for colour-treated hair.
Complexe 5
A concentrate of orange and lavender essential oils massaged into a dry scalp before shampooing, left for five to ten minutes, then washed out. It stimulates circulation and clears build-up. From a hairstylist's chair: this is the one product from this list every stylist I trained with had in their kit. It is strong; do not leave it on longer than directed, and do not use it on a broken or sunburnt scalp.
Triphasic for thinning hair
The brand's treatment for progressive (hereditary) thinning, sold as a serum and a shampoo, used with Complexe 5. Like Phytocyane, it is a cosmetic treatment rather than a drug; it is widely recommended in French pharmacies as the first step before minoxidil.
Karité for dry hair
Karité Nutri (shea butter) for very dry hair and Karité Hydra for dry but fine hair. The Karité Nutri Intense Nourishing Mask is the standout product; it is also one of the few masks that works on coarse, curly hair without weighing it down.
Naturia and Astera
Naturia is the gentle daily range: a shampoo for frequent use and a dry shampoo that rivals Klorane's. Astera Fresh is the soothing line for itchy, irritated scalps, with a cooling menthol effect.
