La Roche-Posay: the buyer's guide

La Roche-Posay is the brand French dermatologists write on prescriptions pads. Here is what each line is for, which product to start with, and why the US and European versions of Anthelios are not the same thing.

What the brand is known for

La Roche-Posay is named after a spa town in central France whose selenium-rich spring water has been used for skin complaints since the 1600s. The brand, now part of L'Oréal, builds every line around that water and tests on sensitive skin. Four lines cover nearly everything: Anthelios (sun), Effaclar (oily and acne-prone), Cicaplast (repair) and Toleriane (sensitive, everyday).

Anthelios: the US vs EU question

This is the single most-asked question about the brand. European Anthelios uses filters such as Mexoryl 400 and Tinosorb that the FDA has not approved, so the US Anthelios range is formulated differently and sold under names like Melt-in Milk and UVMune-free versions. The US products are good sunscreens; they are just not the ones French beauty editors are talking about. If a listing promises the EU formula, check that it ships from Europe and that the ingredient list names Mexoryl 400 (ethylhexyl methoxypropylhydroxybenzoate) or Tinosorb.

Effaclar for breakouts

Effaclar Duo (the US version is Effaclar Duo with benzoyl peroxide; the EU version uses niacinamide and LHA) is the brand's bestseller for adult acne. The gel cleanser and the Effaclar Mat moisturizer complete the routine. If your skin is both oily and sensitive, this is usually the gentlest effective line on the shelf.

Cicaplast Baume B5

A panthenol repair balm that French parents use on everything: chapped lips, windburn, post-procedure skin, eczema flares, tattoos. The 100 ml tube is the one to buy; the 40 ml is a travel size at nearly the same price.

Toleriane for sensitive skin

Toleriane Double Repair moisturizer (with and without SPF 30) and the Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser are the daily-use products. They are fragrance-free and contain ceramides and niacinamide, which is why they appear on so many dermatologists' "just use this" lists.

Questions people ask

Is La Roche-Posay on Amazon the real thing?

Yes when the listing is sold by Amazon or by La Roche-Posay's own store. Third-party sellers shipping from Europe are usually genuine too, but check that the product is not expired: sunscreen has a printed expiry date.

Which Anthelios should I buy in the US?

Anthelios Melt-in Milk SPF 60 for body and face, or Anthelios UV Correct SPF 70 if you want a tinted daily face sunscreen. Both are the US formulas and both are excellent.

Is it cruelty-free?

La Roche-Posay is owned by L'Oréal and is sold in mainland China, so it is not certified cruelty-free.
